Heritage Fire and Safety Limited was established by Mike Coull in April 2010 to assist in the safeguarding of the built heritage from the effects of fire and other incidents.

Mike was a member of Grampian Fire and Rescue Service for 32 years, serving in a range of management posts, including Head of Health and Safety, Emergency Planning Officer and Risk Manager.

In 1998, Mike was appointed ‘Heritage Officer’ for Grampian Fire and Rescue Service, and since then he has gained valuable experience and expertise in managing fire safety in historic buildings.

Mikes expertise in the field of fire protection of heritage properties can be demonstrated through a summary of experience of working with property owners, heritage agencies and others in raising awareness of the threat from fire to the built heritage and developing strategies to reduce this threat, including:

Mike is a member of the Historic Scotland-chaired Scottish Historic Buildings Fire Liaison Group and has been involved in the research and development of published Technical Advice Notes (TANs 11, 14, 22 and 28) on the recently published Guide for Practitioners 7 – Fire Safety Management in Traditional Buildings.

Mike has considerable experience of working with owners of heritage properties in developing damage control plans, an understanding of the information fire-fighting crews require when attending a fire incident and an understanding of the operational procedures adopted in historic buildings.

Mike has been carrying out the lead role for the Historic Scotland funded Scottish Historic Buildings National Fire Database project.
Mike was a member of Cost Action C17, a European research initiative entitled ‘Built Heritage: Fire Loss to Historic Buildings.’
